I’m Penny Joy…

Family time, weekly dates with the hubby, studying the Bible, worshipping Yeshua (Jesus), daily workouts, archery shoots, elk hunting, sitting under pine trees, hiking, long walks by the water, writing poetry and books, all things music (especially Johnny Cash), learning to play the piano and guitar, lots of singing, lots of dancing (yep, I'm an 80's hip hop girl), playing games with family and friends, pickleball - AKA Pickleball Penny, learning about homesteading and gardening, overlanding in the mountains of Idaho, long bike rides in the countryside with my husband, kayaking, fishing, escape rooms, and laser tag. How's that for variety?

I love my life IN CHRIST!

Fun Facts about me:

  • I get married every year to the same guy (yes, we have an actual wedding with vows) and we haven't missed our monthly anniversary in 26+ years. We are perpetual newlyweds, and we plan on keeping it that way.

  • I'm a two-time Wheel of Fortune reject. I've made it the finals where it was just between me and another person, and I didn't get on the show. It is not exactly my claim to fame, but a fun fact anyway.

I am so glad that you are here!

THINGS I LOVE:

She understands how to shape and deliver messages that resonate—whether the audience is internal stakeholders, clients, or the broader public."

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND HER

My Story…For His Glory

Disclaimer: My story discusses suicide and mental health topics, which may be distressing to some. If you are in crisis or need help, please call or text the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988 (in the U.S.) or contact your local emergency services. You are not alone—help is available.

Born into challenging circumstances, Penny faced immense loss early on, losing her mother at age 12 and her father at 18. As an at-risk youth, she confronted addiction, domestic violence, and a period of homelessness, yet she persevered against the odds, driven by a desire to create a better life.

At 22, Penny hit rock bottom, and her life took a profound turn when she accepted Christ. At the time, Penny was an atheist, but a divine encounter during a suicide attempt made her an instant believer in a God who was real and very personal. This encounter set her on a path of purpose and compassion, igniting a desire to serve others. Determined to rise above her circumstances, she ultimately graduated from Fresno Pacific University, marking a major milestone in her journey. She embarked on missions work in orphanages in Mexico and Romania, attended Bible college, and later ran a city-wide youth program through the Gospel Rescue Mission that impacted hundreds of inner-city children and youth.

This deep commitment to ministry extended into her professional pursuits, where Penny worked in education administration and teaching, eventually leading her into executive management positions in government, nonprofit organizations, and entrepreneurial business pursuits. However, her drive for performance often led her into cycles of burnout and personal neglect, setting the stage for future health challenges, including a three-year bout with Lyme disease.

In her quest for healing, Penny redirected her career path, diving into graduate-level studies in functional health and nutrition, where she discovered a new passion for wellness. Together with her husband, her best friend of now 26+ years, she immersed herself in fitness and health, teaching community health classes at local churches and inspiring others to prioritize their well-being. Penny then ventured into racing, running her first marathon, and competing in an IronMan-length challenge. Her professional success continued when she began working for a renowned biohacker and health influencer. Yet, despite her achievements, Penny found herself back in a cycle of chronic illness that culminated in a major health crisis at age 49, facing episodic amnesia and confronting the emotional toll her life had taken.

This crisis became a turning point. During this season, Penny committed to a profound healing journey, uncovering the deep, suppressed traumas that had been masked by busyness and the pursuit of success. Through God’s transforming love, she began to work through past losses, broken friendships, and deep emotional wounds that had manifested in physical and emotional struggles. This journey was marked by God’s care, guiding her through soul-deep healing and bringing peace and resilience that made her 50th year a season of renewal and restoration.

Today, Penny has turned her pain into purpose. Alongside her husband, she has devoted herself to full-time ministry, serving others and helping them achieve their best lives personally and professionally. Penny is the founder of Abide for Life, a teaching ministry to support believers in their walk with Yeshua (Jesus). She now consults and coaches businesses and ministries with start-up operations, writes books, and speaks to audiences about the power of faith, physical and emotional healing, and transformation. Penny is the also host of the Abide with Penny Joy podcast with a mission to help believers abide in Christ in all areas of life.

Penny Joy’s journey is proof of God’s power to heal the body and transform the heart, mind, and soul. Her story is a testament to the beauty that can come from even the most challenging seasons. Penny is committed to empowering others to walk in divine health and embrace God’s unique calling and purpose for their lives.

HOW I GOT HERE

A journey of loss to abiding love for Christ and others

1997

I hit rock bottom and Jesus came to my rescue

Having lost my mom at age 12 and my dad at age 18, the foundations of my life were shaken. Abuse and addiction had taken hold. I was young, hopeless, homeless at times, and desperate to the stop the pain I held within me. In a suicide attempt, God showed up in the room and saved my life. I became an instant believer and went on to bible college, missionary training school, and foreign missions to Mexico and Romania to share the love, hope, and saving grace of Jesus Christ. I will never understand why God saved my life that dark day, but I will forever give my life back to Him and declare Him to the world. Death and darkness was replaced with love, light, joy, and peace.

May 2000

Married the love of my life & best friend.
Opportunities abound.

In May of 2000, I married my best friend, Chris, and together we began a life filled with faith, purpose, adventure, and a deep and abiding love for God and for each other.

Over the years, we attended bible school and got our degrees together, served in inner-city ministries, ran countless races—including the Big Sur Marathon—and pursued careers in entrepreneurship, nonprofit leadership, and local government. We've traveled extensively, climbed Half Dome in Yosemite, and embraced every season as an opportunity to grow together.

One of the traditions that has shaped our marriage is our annual wedding, where we renew our vows and celebrate God's faithfulness. It's a practice that has helped keep us in a perpetual newlywed season, intentionally choosing one another year after year.

Our relationship was strengthened during one of life's most difficult seasons when Chris faithfully loved, prayed for, and cared for me through three years of Lyme disease. Through every challenge and every blessing, our faith has deepened and our bond has grown stronger.

After my relationship with Jesus Christ, being married to Chris has been the greatest blessings of my life. More than twenty-six years later, we remain best friends, ministry partners, and fellow adventurers. Our love story is founded on God's Word, sustained by His lovingkindness, and continues to be one of the greatest gifts He has given us.

Deep work begins @ Age 49

A major health crisis resulted in episodic amnesia, loss of a career, deep friendships, and identity gave me a hard stop in life. I had no choice but to dig deep and heal from pride, abandonment trauma, a life-time of performance addiction, misaligned identity, limiting beliefs, and avoidant behaviors.

God came closer than ever as I surrendered to Him - and I was forever changed. I was awakened to a new level of awareness and understanding of the finished work in Christ and what it means to truly abide with Him in life, love, and leadership.

For the first time in my life, I entered into His rest and found peace from my striving.

Today - 2026

Healing…Whole & Thriving

Today, I am living my best life with my dream man and fulfilling my purpose to love God and love others in Word and in deed. I am present with God, my body, my husband and family, and friendships.

I spend my days being a help-mate to my husband, caring for family, leading and consulting businesses and ministries, returning to my love of writing, and sharing my story and the Abide Framework at conferences, retreats, and master-minds.

My life is filled with creative ventures such as singing, dancing, archery, hunting, learning new instruments, playing games with friends and family, and exploring God’s boundless creation with awe and wonder.

I would not be where I am today without the saving grace of my Lord Jesus Christ and the faithful love of my husband, Christopher.
